The Island`s Beaches

I`ve been lucky enough to visit and live on beaches all around the world, and in my experience, you usually have to travel to remote, hard to reach places to find ones that haven`t been ruined by over-development and commercial tourism. This isn`t the case in San Pietro as all the beaches are within a short drive or bike ride from wherever you are on the island, and I can also honestly say that they are amongst the most beautiful I`ve ever seen. There are some simple reasons for this. They are natural, unspoiled, and empty.

Nature is left to do what it does best, regulate itself. Some years there are eight beaches, and depending on the winter storms, the next there might only be six. Sand isn`t shipped in at a great expense to nature; we simply go to another beach where there is some. During the winter, some beaches are covered with kelp, torn from the seabed, and deposited on the shore where it plays host to the Islands fauna. Then when another storm hits, it disappears back into the sea.

Resulting in virgin clean sand, and quite often, you are the first human to feel it between your toes.
